Most often, Smeal students relocate in order to take advantage of the wonderful opportunity of earning an advanced degree in business. Many students have families who accompany them and we realize the impact that such a move may have on them. Lion Partners is a new organization, whose intention is to welcome and provide support for partners and family members who come with Smeal students. We know what a huge leap of faith you are taking and feel that this program will help to bridge that gap.
In the past two years, Lion Partners has become an official Smeal College of Business group, solidifying our home in the school through a variety of different avenues. Socially, we have offered events such as a hike on Mount Nittany, monthly dinners, and group outings to various Penn State athletic events. These family friendly get togethers allow us to reach out to one another and talk to others who are in a very similar situation. We have even more exciting events planned for this year as well!
Lion Partners is hoping to make the transition for incoming students’ families as seamless as possible. Among other activities, we are making an effort to have one-on-one meetings with perspective students’ partners while your partner is involved in their interview process. In addition, we are starting an international “hang out” night each week to engage those students who’s partner may not know English yet. One night a week, a current lion partner will host an informal social where we will play games, watch movies, etc in an effort to help those learning English assimilate with friendly faces, outside a classroom setting.
We have also coordinated with the other associations in the college, such as the MBAA and their annual Thanksgiving dinner. This yielded our first service project, as we collected food to donate to the Centre County Food Bank. As we become a stronger organization, we hope to be able to make a large contribution to our community through additional service projects.
Most importantly, we hope to make you feel as comfortable as possible during your adjustment to life in Central Pennsylvania. As an organization, we hope to offer what we, as partners, feel is necessary in order to make a smooth transition to life in Happy Valley. Please contact us for info on housing, things to do in the area, restaurant recommendations, you name it! Penn State is a great place to be and we want to be able to share it with all of you!
